provocation
Provocations are open ended material displayed in such a way that it provokes the interest of your child. The intention of a provocation is to provide an invitation for your child to explore the material and express themselves. it can spark questions, theories, ideas, and discussions allowing your child to think and create.
An example of a provocation might be displayed pictures of stacked rocks and a variety of sizes and shapes of rocks set next to them. A question may be asked such as, " can you stack rocks?" or, "how many rocks can you stack?"
Your child can learn many things from this simple activity. Noticing shape and size along with counting allow for math experiences while stacking takes fine motor skills. Language is used to describe and discuss allowing for the possibility of added adjectives and definitions to your child's vocabulary. If more than one child is engaged then there is an opportunity to communicate and collaborate providing a path for social skill development.
